Ormond Beach hometown history...... Ormond Beach a special place populated with Native Americans and developed by ship builders, sugarcane planters, railroad magnates and hoteliers. Ormond Beach became the location for millionaire's vacation homes & automobile manufacturers in the early 20th century. In 1903 the automobile hit the beach racing on the hard packed smooth sand. These first speed tournaments in the US earned Ormond Beach the title "birthplace of speed". In 1886 the rail line came to Ormond Beach building the first bridge over the Halifax river in 1887. John Anderson, and Joseph Price builders of the first bridge had pioneered their way to Beachside to build a hotel known as Hotel Ormond. Grand opening in 1888, with 75 rooms. Two years later, Ormond hotel was sold to Henry Flagler the founder of the East Coast Railway. Henry Flagler contributed as a key figure to the development of East Coast Florida, as well as the founder of Palm Beach and Miami. By 1904, he expanded Ormond Hotel and added a railroad bridge to transport guest to the hotel. Anderson and Price manage the hotel until their death in 1911. John D Rockefeller spent several winters in hotel Ormond until he purchased the Casements in 1918 located across the street from hotel Ormond. The Casements became his winter home until his death in 1937, age 97. The Ormond hotel was demolished in 1992.
